The Overcup oak (Quercus lyrata) is a deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States, known for its tolerance of both wet and dry soils, making it adaptable for landscaping. It's a fast-growing, long-lived tree that produces acorns almost entirely enclosed in a unique, warty cap, providing significant wildlife value. Key features include leathery leaves with rounded lobes that turn yellow in fall, rough bark, and a strong central leader.

Bought pair for yard and planted one in a pot as a trial. Leaves are still large, but seem to have potential for reduction. Leaves start as red/pink/white comps that look like flowers. Color lasts up to two weeks. Must k keep away from squirrels chipmunks and deer when buds are fresh.

Got another one in May 2026.
