The common name "shortleaf pine" may refer to other species like loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). Shortleaf pine can be found in a variety of well drained out slopped soils including, stiff clay, gravel, and sand. two (sometimes three) needles. Seedlings often have a basal crook, which is a j-shaped physiological feature of the pine species that allows it to resprout after topkill. Starter an air layer on sacrificial lead. Used a mix of pumice and spagnum more as medium. Used sliced plastic pot method. Covered top with opaque but porous tree-rap material. Let's in water keeps out sun.

Applied 'flaps' to top of girdle area to promote tissue growth. Chopped lead back to promote new bud break.

Checked on July 17. Lots of new shoots on top and roots had started to sprout. Applied more hormone and closed back up.

Trimmed last year's growth on a sacrificial leader as buds were starting to push in early spring. Waited until new buds appeared a month later in early May. Then attempted an air layer further down on area with third year needles. Scored and slightly pealed short tabs on the top of the scraped cambium. Applied powder rooting hormone.
