The branches of the Nejikan bonsai are often few in relation to the massive trunk, and they may also exhibit curves and twists. The leaves or needles, depending on the tree species, can be small in size, but they are generally proportionate to the size of the bonsai.

La torsión característica del Punica granatum 'Nejikan' no es el resultado de una técnica de modelado forzada, sino de una mutación genética natural.
¿Por qué ocurre?
Crecimiento Celular en Espiral: A diferencia de otros árboles donde las células de la madera crecen de forma lineal, en el 'Nejikan' las células del tronco se desarrollan siguiendo un patrón hacia la izquierda (sentido antihorario) a medida que el árbol madura.
Venas Linfáticas Prominentes: Al madurar, las venas que transportan la savia se hinchan y se marcan profundamente en la corteza, acentuando el efecto de "cuerda retorcida" o espiral.
Naturaleza Genética: Es una característica intrínseca de esta variedad japonesa. Por esta razón, para mantener la torsión exacta, se suele propagar mediante esquejes o acodos, ya que las semillas pueden no replicar fielmente la mutación del progenitor.
Evolución con la edad
Aunque la genética dicta la torsión, esta se hace mucho más evidente con el paso de los años. En ejemplares jóvenes, la corteza es más lisa, pero a medida que el tronco gana grosor, las líneas de torsión se vuelven surcos profundos y sinuosos que son el "Santo Grial" para los coleccionistas de bonsái.
