shortleaf pine or Pinus echinata (common makes: "shortleaf pine", "old field", "spruce", "rosemary", "yellow", "two-leaf" and "heart" pine). The common name "shortleaf pine" may refer to other species like loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). Shortleaf pine can be found in a variety of well drained out slopped soils including, stiff clay, gravel, and sand. two (sometimes three) needles. Seedlings often have a basal crook, which is a j-shaped physiological feature of the pine species that allows it to resprout after topkill. Pine sawfly caterpillar had eaten several entire bud groupings. Got most of the caterpillars with a hand held vacuum and then sprayed horticulture oil.
