The Shakan bonsai style is characterized by a trunk that leans, but not excessively in relation to the vertical. The branches of the Shakan bonsai are also inclined in the same direction as the trunk, but they do not touch the ground. They are harmoniously arranged along the inclined trunk.

The leaves or needles of the Shakan bonsai are generally small and fine, and they are arranged symmetrically along the branches. The whole tree evokes a sensation of grace and movement, while maintaining a visual balance.
