The Bankan style
Twisted style

The Bankan style, also known as the "twisted trunk" style, is a particularly dramatic and expressive form in the art of bonsai. This style mimics ancient trees shaped by the weather and challenges of nature, often depicted by contorted trunks and branches that intertwine in complex spirals. These twists give the impression that the tree has battled against strong winds or harsh weather conditions for years, surviving through remarkable strength and resilience. Thus, the Bankan style is a symbol of perseverance and durability, embodying the ability to overcome adversity.

Aesthetically, the Bankan style bonsai is striking and memorable. The trunk, which is often knotty and twisted into nearly impossible configurations, becomes the focal point of the piece. This complexity of the trunk is balanced by relatively simple and strategically placed foliage, highlighting the structure of the wood rather than concealing it. The visible branches and roots are also manipulated to complement and enhance the spiral movement of the trunk, creating a visual harmony that reflects the tree's interaction with its environment over time.

Symbolically, the Bankan style speaks of beauty born from struggle. It evokes images of endurance against the elements and an ability to adapt and thrive in unfavorable conditions. Bonsai enthusiasts who choose this style are often drawn to its expression of character and inner strength, making each Bankan unique to the vision of its creator. This style requires a deep understanding of the tree's natural growth as well as a very careful technique of wiring and pruning to maintain and accentuate its twisted forms over the years.
