Miniature landscape

Penjing, or saikei in its Japanese version, is an art form that aims to recreate a true miniature landscape. Unlike classical bonsai, which focuses mainly on a single tree, penjing/saikei incorporates several elements to compose a harmonious scene: trees, rocks, water, moss, figurines, or traditional structures.

The trees used in a penjing/saikei can have various shapes, straight or winding, depending on the landscape the artist wants to evoke. Their arrangement is never symmetrical: each tree plays a specific role in visual balance, imitating forest formations or trees clinging to cliffs.

Rocks are an essential element of penjing/saikei. They structure the space, create levels, plateaus, or gorges, and help suggest miniature mountains, rivers, or valleys. Moss, small plants, and sometimes a few accessories are used to enhance this illusion of living nature.

Penjing/saikei primarily seeks to convey an atmosphere: a peaceful, wild, dramatic, or poetic scene. The goal is to evoke a real natural landscape, with its depth, nuances, and imperfections, as if the viewer were observing a miniature world where each element tells a story.

This art offers immense artistic freedom, allowing for the composition of entire environments rather than a single tree, and expressing a more narrative and emotional vision of nature.
