The Chokkan style in bonsai is characterized by a straight, vertical, and conical trunk. This trunk rises directly from the base of the bonsai without significant curvature or twisting. PODA y PINZADO: Debe tenerse en cuenta que la cicatrización es muy lenta, por lo cual ha de prestarse mayor atención a las ramas gruesas. Para mejorar la cicatrización se podará en la época de crecimiento y se ayudará con una buena pasta cicatrizante después de la poda. Para aumentar la ramificación deben dejarse crecer los nuevos brotes hasta que tengan de 8 a 10 hojas (recordad que son compuestas) y cortar dejando solamente dos del nuevo crecimiento. El algarrobo es de crecimiento lento y si se pinza antes de que la rama se desarrolle un poco, se frenará el crecimiento. Si lo que se desea es mantener la estructura, se pinzarán los nuevos brotes cuando hayan sacado un par de hojas, eliminando la yema terminal.
